The 2027 SSI payment calendar: which months bring two payments, and why

SSI is paid on the first of the month, and when the first falls on a weekend or holiday the money comes early. In 2027 that produces three months with two payments and three with none, starting with a January payment that arrives December 31, 2026.
Key takeaways
- SSI pays on the 1st, and when the 1st is a weekend or federal holiday the payment moves to the last business day before it, so some months get two payments and the next month gets none.
- The second payment in a month is next month's money, not extra, and SSA counts it as income for the month it was due.
- Mark the 2027 dates now, set the early payment aside, and if two payments stack in one account, bring your countable resources to the limit or below before the following month begins.
You receive Supplemental Security Income, and the deposit that usually arrives on the first showed up early, or twice in one month, or not at all. Nothing is wrong. The calendar did it, and 2027 has a shape worth knowing.
When is SSI paid, and what moves the date?
SSI is paid on the first day of the month. When the first falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, Social Security pays it on the business day before.12 That one rule explains the table below: a month with two payments received the next month’s payment early, and the month after has none.
January 1, 2027 is a Friday and a federal holiday, New Year’s Day.3 So the January 2027 SSI payment is paid Thursday, December 31, 2026.9 The 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment applies to all Social Security and SSI benefits, and SSI pays it first, in that December 31 payment: a federal maximum of $1,029 a month for an individual and $1,544 for an eligible couple, up from $994 and $1,491.4 December 2026 therefore carries two SSI payments, December 1 at the old rate and December 31 at the new one, and January 2027 carries none.
What does the 2027 SSI calendar look like month by month?
| Month | SSI payment date(s) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| January | None (paid December 31, 2026) | January 1 is a Friday and New Year's Day3 |
| February | Monday, February 1 | On schedule |
| March | Monday, March 1 | On schedule |
| April | Thursday, April 1 and Friday, April 30 | May 1 is a Saturday, so May's payment comes April 30 |
| May | None | Paid April 30 |
| June | Tuesday, June 1 | On schedule |
| July | Thursday, July 1 and Friday, July 30 | August 1 is a Sunday, so August's payment comes July 30 |
| August | None | Paid July 30 |
| September | Wednesday, September 1 | On schedule |
| October | Friday, October 1 | On schedule |
| November | Monday, November 1 | On schedule |
| December | Wednesday, December 1 and Thursday, December 30 | January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so the holiday is observed Friday, December 31, and January 2028's payment comes December 301 |
The dates were checked against SSA’s 2027 payment schedule and OPM’s 2027 holiday list.13 Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, 2027, but June 1 is a Tuesday and a business day, so June’s payment stays on June 1.3

If you filed after April 1997 and do not also receive SSI, your payment day generally depends on the birth date of the worker whose record you are paid on: second Wednesday for the 1st through the 10th, third Wednesday for the 11th through the 20th, fourth Wednesday for the 21st through the 31st.25 No 2027 federal holiday falls on a Wednesday, so those dates do not move.3
A separate group is paid on the 3rd of the month: people who were receiving Social Security before May 1997, and people who receive both Social Security and SSI.25 The 3rd follows the same early-payment rule.5 In 2027 it shifts four times: January’s payment to December 31, 2026 (the 3rd is a Sunday, the 1st a holiday), April’s to April 2, July’s to July 2, and October’s to October 1.13
Why is a two-payment month not a bonus?
Because the second payment is the next month’s money, delivered early. Spend it in April and May has no deposit. SSA agrees: a regular payment received early because the normal date fell on a weekend or holiday is counted as income in the month it was normally due, not the month it arrived.6
The same rule protects you on the resource side. SSI’s resource limit is $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple, unchanged for 2027.4 Resources are measured as of the first moment of each month.7 For an early payment, SSA’s policy evaluates the funds as a resource starting the month after the month of normal receipt.6 So the December 31 payment does not count against the limit on January 1, 2027; it would on February 1 if it were still in the account on top of savings near the limit.6
Benefits Insider covered the December pattern (July 2026): why SSI recipients get the raise in December. Your own payment may differ from the federal rate if your state adds a supplement, you have other income or deductions apply; SSI also runs on strict monthly earnings rules.
What to do
- Put the 2027 dates where you pay bills, with reminders for the four early payments: December 31, 2026, April 30, July 30 and December 30, 2027. The December 30 payment is January 2028’s.13
- Check the dates against SSA’s 2027 schedule, Publication 05-10031, at ssa.gov/pubs/calendar.htm, or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).18
- If you receive both Social Security and SSI, expect two separate deposits each month, one on the 3rd and one on the 1st.2
- In a two-payment month, leave the second payment untouched until the following month, then check your countable resources, not just the bank balance, against the $2,000 or $3,000 limit; at the limit you are still eligible.47
- If a direct deposit does not arrive on the scheduled date, ask your bank first, then call 1-800-772-1213 or your local office; for a paper check, SSA says to allow three extra mailing days first.18
- Ignore any call or text offering to “release” or “speed up” a payment; SSA does not do that, and scams cluster around payment dates.
